instances and databases

Hi,

I'm confused about the distinction between databases and instances.

I reckon an Instance is a group of processes which access the physical storage (the database).

The CREATE DATABASE statements has a parameter MAXINSTANCES which presumably means I can have more than one instance per database. Does a value > 1 make any sense if I am not running parallel server ?

Thanks,
Richar Sullivan
