Gerhard,

When you shutdown 7.3.4 on NT using 'net stop Oracle..' you are issuing a 'shutdown abort', and hence in your alert file you'll notice that recovery is always taking place.

Better method is to script a proper 'shutdown' then use net stop on the service.
