(1) at first you should create a password file using orapwd (on NT it's named orapwd80) [see the other mails]

(2) there can be another cause: if you create or start a database using your initXXXX.ora-pfile you can set the REMOTE_PASSWORD-variable (i don't remember the correctly form, but you should find it) onto the values SHARED or EXCLUSIV. If you use SHARED your users system, sys and internal are used as shared db-system-administrators for all your databases (instances ;-) ) on your server. in exclusiv mode they belong to only one instance. And therefore the ORACLE_SID in the registry must be changed, if you want to connect to your special instance.
