Replication Schemes

Comments on the following scenario would be appreciated.

ERP running Oracle on the backend. Custom application running a second version of Oracle on the front end. Custom application uses inventory records existing in the backend. A user on the backend makes a change through the ERP system that updates the on hand quantity for a particular item. We would like to REPLICATE the change from the backend ERP database to the front end custom application database in real or near-real time. Many discussions amongst this group suggest this is a cumbersome route to take. Are there other options?
