Hi Michael,

I had tremendous problems getting Oracle 8.0.5 to run on S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3, but finally I had success (thanks to Chad Edwards and my wife). The instructions below assume you don't have any data at all in the default databases installed with the product for review. If you do, back the stuff up!

• Triple-check the environment. LD_LIBRARY_PATH must be set right or your stuff will never link.
• Make sure user oracle and group dba has write/execute permission on all mountpoints and directories. UNIX propagates the rwx settings of the highest (i.e. closest to root) point all the way down the chain, so you can have everything set properly but if your mountpoint for the drive is owned by root - root as usual you are hosed.
• Make sure you have the gcc libraries up to date. I believe that your version comes with the correct libraries. Typing gcc -v should result in version 2.7.2.1 see SuSE support if you don't have these libraries.
• Try to uninstall everything. If this fails due to an instance already running, as oracle go to $ORACLE_HOME/bin. Type svrmgrlO (lowercase L, uppercase O) to get into svrmgr. Issue connect internal. Then issue shutdown. This should kill the "running" version. Then exit.
• Delete /etc/oratab .
• Re-run install, but only select the bare minimum components: client, Net8, Unix installer, any libraries (I think the libraries get selected by default). Do not select any of the sql or the rdbms stuff.
• Follow the instructions and do the root.sh script.
• Now load up the rdbms (just click through all the defaults, keeping the sizes and allowing file overwrites).
• Now load sql*plus. Test it. You should be up and running.

After this, you should be able to load anything. SuSE has a warning about the IntelligentAgent. If I were you, I would load these goodies one at a time after you establish basic functionality.

I think the installer is lame - it does things out of order. By doing what I outlined above, you ensure that all the crazy libraries are loaded and set before any of the complex components call on them to link.

Anyone who knows anything and wants to comment please do. I'd like to understand the whys of this some more!
