Much of what Chris wrote I would second. It would really depend on what each of these schemas/databases are doing, how many users on each one at a given time, and how much data is being 'pushed around'.

If the customer is NT proficient, you might want to consider one or more Digital/Compaq Alpha's running Win NT. I had such a machine as a test-bed - and was processing data at about 70% of a larger Unix system.....not bad price/performance at all. And more horsepower than Intel/NT alternatives.
