I found a message on some other group which suggested....

  1. do a normal install (but don't create the databases)
  2. after install completes copy the /bin files directly from the release CD to the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory!
  3. re-run the installer to create the databases if you want

This got me going on RH6.0 w/o having to relink everything to the old glib. I am still not exactly sure why this works since ldd tells me that the Ora binaries are indeed setup for dynamic linking to the old libs. It must be that the linker finds the older glib and correctly resolves to them.
