I use Oracle 8 as a backend to complex reporting functions as part of a data conversion project I am working on (VMS RDB to Oracle 8).

Yes, the speed is terrible if you plan to work on large tables, especially where joins across other tables will prevail, the resultant cross product can lead to long process times, eg. a report I do that used tables of up to 8,000 records would take many hours to run, hence I create temp tables on the desktop db and run the same report in minutes.

Consequently all data for reporting is preloaded down to the desktop (Access 97, NT 4 and a big Pentium) to process locally. This would be a poor choice for a major application, but Access is providing a good tool to assist in the DC project.

Access 2000 will be interesting as a developer can write real Client Server (SQLServer backend) using Access. Received on Mon Jun 14 1999 - 06:02:14 CDT
