Why is my database so huge?

I have a empty database, that I imported a 6MB export file into. The tablespace containing all the tables in the export file is now 284MB!

I understand that there is some overhead, indices, free space, etc. But 6 to 284???

Where is this space?

does "select avg_space*blocks from all_tables" tell me how much empty space there is in my tables?
