how do I start SVRMGRL and do shutdown immediate???

hello....
I would like to know how to start the srvmgrl and do a shutdown immediate of the database for backup purposes... is this possible??? how can I put this into a shell script or a crontab job????? I am running oracle 7.3.3 on AIX 4.3.1

any help would be welcome....
