question on packages

I know the benefits of using packages from the oo viewpoint (information hiding, modularity, etc.). However, would like to know if there is anything one has to compromise on when using a package approach rather than stored procedures ? (performance/ SGA space/ implementation issues). Secondly, is the package implementation on Oracle 7.3 bug/issue free ? or are there some bugs which have perhaps been addressed and fixed in Oracle 8 ?? (would also appreciate help on whether one can access a public knowledgebase for such information)
