8.1 is the first version to support Linux kernel version 2.2 (which is what RedHat 6.0 is using). While I believe you can upgrade the OS around a pre-installed RDBMS and have it work (although ORA-600 errors become rather common) you really need to upgrade to the 8.1.5 version of the RDBMS to make it work.
