Donning Asbestos Flame Suite:

Just like all things Microsoft, it is inevitable SQL Server will dominate the database market. Just think about it, there hasn't been a market that Microsoft hasn't ultimately dominated if given enough time. I remember in the early days when there were fierce battles and speculation as to who would dominate this market or that. Lets take a look at it:

Microsoft has dominated the following and has left its respective competitor for dead:
Operating Systems: Windows(DOS) vs. OS/2 Word Processors: Word vs. WordPerfect
Spreadsheets: Excel vs. Quattro Pro
C++ Compilers: MSVC vs. Borland
Office Suites: MS Office vs. Lotus Suite

Microsoft is currently engaged in the following battles: NT vs. Unix
IIS vs. Unix web servers (apache etc)
SQL Server vs. Oracle
Internet Explorer vs. Netscape Navigator

Although the battle is raging on with Microsoft slightly behind in the web server and Database areas, just give them a little time. They are relative newcomers to these fields but the writing is on the wall. I develop internet applications and there is a saying among Microsoft developers:

"Microsoft Tools are a developers dream and a sysadmin's worst nightmare."

but their servers are only going to get better with time and if worse comes to worst you can always just add more hardware until they catch up. I could go on even about such trivial things as joysticks (the MS Sidewinder was revolutionary and cheap for its day)

Counting on Microsoft to fail in any area they attempt to compete in is analogous to those investors that shorted MSFT stock in the '80s which has since split and doubled a dozen times. In other words, don't ever bet against them.

Pretty ironic coming from a Frenchman that you should criticize one of the most successful companies the world has ever known. I think everyone is aware of the success French products such as Peugeots, Renaults, and Citroens have had in the US.

(for those that are not aware, France stopped importing their cars to the US many years ago because we wouldnt buy those technological wonders)
