I have been administering both Oracle and SQL Server databases for the past year, and I can tell you that SQL Server has consistently been the problem child of the two. When things break I find it much more difficult and time consuming to fix them, in spite of the "fact" that it's designed to do a lot of the work for you.

Tech support for SQL Server (which you will need to purchase) is $1700 per year for only 10 issues (only ten problems)

vs. Oracle which is the same price for UNLIMITED calls per year.(for our Oracle products, at any rate)

My experiences with SQL Server have led me to never want anything to do with SQL Server again. It has a lot of functional shortcomings in my biased opinion.
