Oracle Application Server - Creating a DAD

Im trying to create a DAD from Oracle application Server so that it will be able to contact the DB.
in the form for creating the DAD there is a possibility to fill the :Database Name (ORACLE_SID)
or the : Connect String
1)When should I use each of them or both? 2)I try to figure it out for myself and the recommended value to place there is the ORACLE_SID name , which in my case is orcl (as shown in the tnsnames.ora).
when using that on the Connect String I got this error back: "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name" What is the problem and how can I solve it. thank you
