Retrieving query results to temporary table ???

Does anyone know what the best way is to 'disconnect' + store the results of a query.

That is, within a single SQL statement I would like to run a query then update the result set without updating the values in the original tables.

Are snapshots the way to do this ??

I apologise if this is a basic question.

Thanks in advance,
