changing NIC on Oracle server, any problem?

A friend of mine told me that when he changed the NIC (an old 10Mb NE2000 compatible) of his Oracle server to a 3COM 100Mb (tested and approved on another machine), Oracle stopped working. Neither IP nor hostname were changed, just the NIC. He changed back to the old NIC and Oracle started working again. I thought that to be very strange, but now I have to do the same on my server and I am afraid of cracking my system. Did it happen to anyone here? Any clues why that happened to my friend? It it possible to happer at all?

Thanks,
