First, do you actually need real-time backup? Bear in mind that real-time
backup implies a
second "shadow" system -- preferably in a geographically remote location
that is able to assume the processing load as soon as the primary system
fails. In addition to all of the costs associated with a second data center
the additional activity may also reduce performance since data must be sent
to two different systems which must be synchronized.
A less expensive alternative that is viable if you can be down for ten to fifteen minutes is to maintain an identical system, restore the nightly backup of the primary to the secondary, and copy the log files from the primary to the secondary during the course of the day. In the event of the primary system going down run database recovery on the secondary system in order to bring it current. (Depending on your confidence in your primary system and how long it takes to bring the secondary system "into sync" you might want to run database recovery several times a day on the secondary system in order to minimize down time.)
