There should be a log file, called oradim<xx>.log in, if I remember correctly, %ORACLE_HOME%\rdbms<xx>\admin. This should provide pointers. The alert log should also provide pointers. This file is located in the background dump directory. The location of this directory is in init<sid>.ora, parameter background_dump_dest.
