question about v$parameter

If you describe v$parameter you discover a column named TYPE which is a NUMBER datatype. The documentation simply states that this column is the parameter type. What does this number mean? I have distinct values 1,2,3 and 4 in my instance but I have no idea what these refer to. Can anybody help?
