select: interrupted system call

System info:

    AIX 4.3.2
    RS/6000 E20, H50 and others
    Oracle 8.0.4

Problem symptoms:

Applications die with exit status 0 after writing 'select: interrupted system call'.

Question:

What's going on?

Yes, I know. I _might very well_ be a non-Oracle problem, but I've tried to eliminate as many other possibilites as I can!
