I would explore other options ... It is an option but it requeires a good
bit of maintenance ... I would consider updatable snapshots if you were going this route ... read only would be better but would be switchover nightmare

I recommend hot standby database ... the new 8i features are great as it allows the db to be opened read only (export) and can be returned to recovery mode ... it also has features that assist in auto recovery ...

I have seen others use a shared drive system and then failover to a new box ... but if the disk is gone ...
