Well, I've done a couple of 8i installs on AIX, so it shouldn't be too disimilar:

I created a new user and group for my 8i, as I don't want the stuff to interfere with the Oracle8 stuff I already have on the server in any way. I used 'oracle8i' and 'dba8i', but you can enter anything you like in the installer - just make sure you've set-up the user and the group first with you OS tools/commands.

You can install a database with the oracle binary install or save it until later and use the 'dbassist' Java tool, or roll it by hand with a normal CREATE DATABASE script. Choice of the three is yours (I've used both option 2 and 3).

You don't need any of this as far as I'm aware, as the installer will pick up the JRE off the CD-ROM. The documentation is a little hazy here for 8i, but I found it ran OK of the CD with it's default JRE.

If you are going to do any development, Oracle will only support JDK1.1.x.
