Graham,
I am running Oracle on a Dual Pentium II box with 2.2.5 kernel and RedHat 5.2. Machine runs great. With little optimization, the box ran a 16 hour report(on HP/UX E55) in 40 minutes. Both Oracle and Linux have optimizations to take advantage of the SMP environment.
