For conventional database monitoring products you are correct. However - this is not the case for the Sql Power SniFFFer product line.

The Sql Power SniFFFer (www.sqlpower.com) can monitor at the SQL transaction level an Oracle database server with ZERO required impact upon the database server, network or end-users since the product:

  1. Can run on any workstation or server located on the same subnet as the database server.
  2. Requires no connection to and no communication with the database server, middleware, proxy servers or end-users.
  3. Does not need to send any data over the network.
  4. Requires no changes to or software installed on the database server, network or end-user workstations.
  5. Requires no Oracle connectivity software.
  6. Analyzes the SQL network packet flow to the database server.

This approach offers 24x7 100% non-intrusive, ZERO impact monitoring of -- SQL transaction performance plus database server/end-user service level statistics monitoring.
