The method of copying archive redo logs and applying to a restoring database, was the unofficial / technically unsupported method for a standby database, prior to 7.3 (i think).

A Standby database as developed by Oracle, provide the routines for the file transfer, and also introduce a number of parameters that mean the database files are masked into another directory. Most importantly though, Oracle support Standby databases.
