It would be helpful if you could include OS information so we can get more specific. I'm assuming you're using NT given the comment about shutting down some processes.
Generally, it is possible to install both Oracle8 and Oracle7 on the same box. You may want to use a separate ORACLE_HOME to ensure the code is kept separate, but this is not strictly necessary. On NT, for example, the version number is included in the executable names, so there shouldn't be any overwriting occurring.
You may want to ensure the system has enough resources to handle both, and there are arguments for whether it should be on the same box or not, particularly if one is for Production and another for Development or Test. However, I won't go into those here.
