Oracle tuning

I would like to know whether striping can reduce disk bottle necks. We experience a large amount of disk I/O bottle necks during transaction posting.

We have several oracle databases (varying in size from 500Mb to 5GB) using file sytsems and a buffer cache and straight mirroring. The machine has 2 disk controllers, each able to manage 16 disks.
