I had the same phenomenon with Ora 8.05 on Linux. The problem was resolved by writing the Oracle-SID in the SID_NAME= clause of listener.ora EXACTLY the same way as the running Oracle instance expected it. Case seems to me an issue when connecting to Oracle via Shm.
