    It works like this. You have to get in an hour or so before your users to read your alert logs and make sure all the backups went OK. In the evening you have to stay until few enough users are on so that they won't be likely to cause major problems they can't resolve. If you can't throw the users off whenever you want, then you have to work after hours for things like upgrades or even object rebuilds - depending on who's using what and when.

    If you're part of a team of DBAs, then you can work out a schedule that's more reasonable. If you're the only one see above. If you're a contractor go for an hourly rate so at least you're paid for the extra time.
