Er, any OS with properly written and used shared memory pages would prevent this. You must have either installed them as the same user, used a pretty crappy OS, or had some seriously buggy code.
I've run Sybase and Oracle on the same box for both AIX and HP-UX without *any* problems. I would never recommend this, but it can easily be done, especially if you've got lots of ram and free disks.

Er, if you can tell me how a user called *sybase* (in it's own group) can write to an active partition owner by a user called *oracle* (in it's own group) - or vice versa - without any permissions on it whatsoever then I am all ears. Sounds like bad installation to me.
