You don't need a special version of perl anymore (with Sybase too).
Wat you need is a recent perl 5, a module named "DBI", and a module
named "DBD::Oracle" (DBD::Sybase for Sybase).

Despite the caveat warnings you'll find everywhere in the DBI docs,
this is pretty stable technology with a large user base. Support for
Oracle 8 comes straight out of the box (almost)
