Hi Paul,

Oracle won't do anything with the datafile as long as there are no segments in it.
There are two types of initial extent:
the explicit one, which you specify when you create a table/index, in the create statement.
If you don't specify an initial extent the implicit initial extent is derived from the initial extent of the default storage clause of the tablespace. In Oracle7 the dba_extents view will show you which extents are in what file.
