Allow me elaborate a little. this new feature is the ability to open the database in READ ONLY mode without breaking the redo chain. This will allow you to stop applying redo logs and open the database readonly. When you shutdown the database you can start applying them again.

So, while the database is open -- no redo is applied, it'll be queued. When the database is closed -- redo is applied but no queries are allowed.

Also new with this is the automatic shipping of redo for you (used to be manual, now done for you). also new is the automated application of redo logs (used to be manual, you had to script it).
