Are you using a V7 client to connect to the 8.0.4 instance? If so when a V7 client selected more than 255 columns from a V8 server using a join, it got OER(24340): This operation cannot support more than 255 columns

It was reported in 8.0.3 and fixed in 8.0.4.1. Call support and reference bug# 618076 if this matches your environment...
