I posted a similar question a few weeks ago, and had a couple of good responses, but I'm really beginning to wonder how many people are actually using RMAN (Recovery Manager) to perform their backups with Oracle8.

I'm not getting the impression that many people are using it yet. There are some pro's and con's to using RMAN, and one of the cons is having to maintain more databases to keep a recovery catalog. I know the catalog isn't an absolute *must*, but is recommended if you're going to use RMAN. Without the catalog, it seems we might as well just be using old-fashioned OS backups combined with exports.

I'm aware of the supposed benefits to using RMAN, and I guess I'm just looking for people who either sing its praises, or feel strongly about staying away from it. Anyone have war stories or strong opinions one way or another?
