Folks
There has been some discussion internally at Oracle recently about the
wisdom of having hidden init.ora parameters (ones that start with "_")
widely discussed (for example, see
http://hayden.home.mindspring.com/psl/test/init2ora.htm). While some of
these hidden parameters are relatively benign, others can cause
irreparable damage to your database (including corruption beyond
repair).
In the time that I've been keeping an eye on this newsgroup, it's obvious that there are some pretty experienced people out there, but there are also some newbies just starting off with Oracle databases. For those to whom this is like teaching your grandmother to suck eggs, my apologies. To others, PLEASE DO NOT USE THESE HIDDEN PARAMETERS WITHOUT ADVICE FROM ORACLE SUPPORT TO DO SO. The site I mentioned above has a flashing red note at the bottom saying this, but there are plenty of others who don't. Be aware of the problems you can cause your database by using these parameters.
Regards
Pete
