If you don't already have a backup then you should stop the database NOW and do a ufsdump of all the disks listed in /etc/fstab or /etc/vfstab depending on your flavour of unix. This makes sure to have a recovery point while you design your hot backup.

Next you grab the Oracle 7 Server Administators Guide and turn to Chapter 23. Read Chapter 24 while you are there. (Actually the whole thing is a good read).

The part number for the Oracle 7.3 version of the Admin Guide (in case you need to get one from Oracle) is A32535-1.
