Karl,

La Cumbre Backup can automatically refresh and rollforward your remote standby database. Exactly the scenario that you are describing. It's a web based product suitable for Unix SVR4 platforms, so all you need to get it up and running is a httpd server such as OWS or Apache.

La Cumbre Backup can be downloaded from;

Also, in the pipeline is a version that can automatically activate the standby upon failure of the primary site. This next version will be available within a month or two.
