Can files be recovered with the 7.3.4 DB open on NT4.0?

After taking a tablespace offline and attempting to rename one of its dbf files, I receive the message "Cannot delete filename: there has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use."

Shutting down the instance, and turning off the Oracle Service allows the file to be renamed or deleted, but is there a way to break the lock held by the Oracle Service without closing the instance?

Thanks in advance for your time and help.
