I KNEW it was gonna be something dumb as soon as I knew what it was!

All those steps, all that fooling around and copying and whatever, and I FORGOT TO RENAME THE FILES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did it again...

Did a backup to trace.
shutdown
Copied all the files.
Edited the trace file to create a series of alter database rename ... to ... for all the files in the trace. Mounted the database and Ran that.
Edited the trace file to put the database files in their new locations Ran the original trace file to create a backup control file did a reset logs

BUT, then I couldn't connect as internal. I had to go into instance manager and delete the instance. Then I recreated it, started it from the new init, which pointed to the new control files, and everything works fine............

The trick was that although I copied the files to their new locations, I'd forgotten to do the rename IN THE DATABASE. I had thought that just changing the locations of the files the backup trace would do it, but it didn't........ trace file Received on Fri Jan 15 1999 - 20:15:42 CST
