How do you insert/retrieve Date with JDBC?

How do you insert and retrieve a java.Sql.Date data type using only a statement, not a preparedStatement?
I assume the Oracle column has to be of type Date as well. I've been doing a lot of experimenting and getting nowhere. Any help will be appreciated!
