ORA-6401

Hi,
I'm trying to use sqlplus (8.0.5) from a HP-UX 10.20 machine. This is a new installation of just the client software on this HP-UX. No instance at all.
The instance I try to connect to is located on a DEC Unix 4.0D (Oracle 8.0.5). I can reach the instance via tnsping:

But when I try sqlplus with the same SID, I get

ORA-06401: NETCMN: invalid driver designator
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Oracle support is investigating...

Any idea?
