    yes. I noted ORACLE creates the username in upper case whereas on unix they're in lower case, however this seems to be ok.

    It turns out this was the problem ( as someone else pointed out through email ). I'd tried "sqlplus" with no connect string and "sqlplus <username>", but hadn't tried "sqlplus /" ( which is, of course, the correct way ). It works now.
