I agree. I have three instances of a single product one a server and would never consider putting them into a single instance. One is production, one pre-production testing, the third for development.

In each case the tuning needs are different. I don't want to give the same resources to a development instance where there are just a few users (developers) as I give to a production database being pounded by hundreds.
