copy datafile to different systems

My apologies for this newbie question, but it is possible to copy a datafile
from a system to another (for example, Sun to AIX, Sun to NT, Sun to Linux)
and how ? Each time I try (tar, cpio, gunzip, ...), DBVERIFY always says that
the datafile copied from one system to another is corrupted.
