It depends on number of users, instance and database size. IMHO proper hardware configuration is a primary concern. However NT behaviour may differ a bit between NT Server and NT Workstation /annoying cache and session manager/. Some of "features" may be corrected with proper registry entries and utils setting desired max file cache size to avoid stealing memory from other processes by cache manager.
BDC or standalone ? Consider activity of NT domain services, your need to set up BDC in domain and decide.
