RMAN & ADSM

Hi,
I has some ploblem ..
We use IBM S70, Os level is 4.3.2 and oracle we perchase adsm and 3494 tape drive for oracle backup. I heard rman need legato when backup to tape drive. Is it right?

In my thought, 3494 tape drive defined in adsm, and rman point some device channel (I saw in manual " type 'sbt_tape' ") oracle backup agent
api send data to adsm server. Is it right?

If database mode is not archivelog mode, rman backup is imposible?
