Ha! I guess my post would seem a little vague to those who have no
experience with Oracle8 partitioning. One of the supposedly great
features about partitioning is that when you query a partitioned table
and your query only requires data from one partition, that's the only
partition that should be accessed. All of the other partitions
unnecessary to satisfy that query are ELIMINATED.
Unfortunately, partition elimination seems to occur under very limited circumstances ... such as when the moon is green and Jupiter aligns with Mars or some such nonsense. That's what I'm trying to find out -- what criteria, or under which circumstances, is the optimizer able to eliminate partitions from access paths.
