Nathaniel-

Of course, you might argue that I'm not entirely objective, but then if you are using Oracle today, objectivity about Oracle8 isn't really the issue, is it?

You can view Oracle8 as simply the next, incremental release of Oracle. If you stay with Oracle, you will migrate to Oracle8 eventually, because 7.3 support will go away in time.

More importantly, migration to O8 is not particularly risky. You certainly don't have to use the object extensions and most people don't, yet. O8 is indeed smoother and faster. Many performance and reliability feature were included in O8. I have migrated databases from O7 to O8 without incident. If your pl/sql is running on 7.3, it should run fine on 8.0 without change.

As far as stability is concerned, that is your call. If you are on a stable release now and are getting the support you need, and have no compelling need to migrate, why bother? The prudent choice would be to stay put. When you need to move, there will be more users with more experience that will have helped to debug the product and the 8.0.x release you will be considering at the time will be better understood and probably considerably cleaner.

And, if you do desire to re-engineer your applications to take advantage of the new object features, you can do so. There is a lot to be gained there.

Just my two cents.
